Frequently asked questions

Why are my iPhone photos HEIC files?

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) to halve storage compared to JPG. It is efficient, but many apps, websites and older systems still cannot open it — converting to JPG makes the photo work everywhere.

How do I open a HEIC file on Windows?

Windows 10 and 11 need paid HEIF extensions from the Microsoft Store to view HEIC. The free shortcut: convert the file to JPG here once, then it opens in any app on any system.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The HEIC decoder runs locally in your browser (WebAssembly), so your photos never leave your device. Your files never leave your device — all processing happens locally in your browser.

Will converting reduce my photo quality?

JPG is lossy, but at the default 90% quality the difference is invisible. PNG output is lossless — choose it for screenshots or images with transparency.
